DEAL PIER CELEBRATES 50th ANNIVERSARY

The golden anniversary of Deal Pier is being celebrated in style with a range of free events for the whole family on Thursday 22 November - including a colourful fireworks display on the pier and a special exhibition marking its 50 years history.

Events to celebrate the pier’s 50th anniversary are being organised to combine with the Christmas lights switching on in Deal. Events organised by Dover District Council will feature a photographic exhibition on the pier from 9am-5pm, and a special fireworks display from the pier from 8pm. The celebrations are combined with activities in the town, with Christmas lights switch-ons being organised by Deal Chamber of Commerce and Deal Town Council.

Deal’s present pier was opened by the Duke of Edinburgh on 19 November 1957. The pier is 1026 feet long and was designed by Sir W Halcrow and Partners. It is well used by visitors and local residents and is internationally recognised as an angling venue.

While celebrating its history, negotiations are underway with the selected tenderer for works for the future, with exciting works on the pier-end café bar. It is anticipated work will commence on site in February/March 2008 and that the new café will be opened to the public in August/September 2008.

This looks to be a great event tied in with a firework display as well, I used to (and still do) enjoy strolling along the pier looking at the anglers catch with the girls when they were younger, I remember having a massive traditional fish & chip lunch in the cafe at the end of the pier. Now the young ladies prefer a bacon roll & a shake in the fifties style cafe opposite (it's like entering an episode of 'Life on Mars'). The pier really does need a major makeover, as it's a great attraction for the town

I would love to watch the celebrations but it being on a Thursday makes it a bit difficult with shift work, I hope everyone has a great time.

Yes I myself am looking forward to the Deal pier makeover in due course. Its well and truly due, and when finished should be a great asset to the town. Sadly for some reason Ive never spent much time in Deal but the more I do the more I like it. It has a certain arty bookish charm not seen in Dover.

The Free celebrations and fireworks sound great for a low cost night out for all the family.

Ah yes havent seen you for a little while but will say hello if I manage to get over to Deal. That should be a very good event. Will definitely say hello in Dover though. Good luck with it all Roy. Yes the old forumites are somewhat dispersed now sadly...perhaps we could do with a few more of them dropping in right here to say hello.
