UPDATE:Terri Deane, the winner of the fantastic prize enjoyed herself enormously at the Ramada Hotel for the fabulous Grease Night celebration. So all's well that ends well. We enjoyed doing the movie competition and glad that someone ended up having a great time and no one better to have that great time than Terri.
Previously: Briony Boland on a flying visit to Dover from University in London was asked to do the necessary. All the names were put into a crash helmet and with great aplomb and eyes averted, BB picked out the winner...and it was none other than TERRISMARK(Terri Deane), long time contributor and member of Doverforum who scooped the prize. The prize of course is a multi-course dinner for two on GREASE NIGHT at the wonderful Ramada Hotel. That's 2 tickets worth £29.95 each for Terri. A night of great food and rock n roll with many hits from the era performed by the Summer Nights group. Wow! I know some of the shy and demure WAGS...Jan Tranter, Colette Boland, Alison Williams have been in a couple of times and seemed to enjoy it all. - Shy ?? Jan, Colette and Alison ?? Never.
Demure ? maybe; lovely ? yes, but not shy.
Roger - I wouldn't call Jan Tranter shy at all! She loves the camera! Everytime I see the newspaper she would be in.
No all Jan! - Of course that comment about 'les girls' being shy and demure was HUGELY tongue in cheek, as anyone who knows them will understand.
I suppose its a tad disappointing so few comments about the positive stories in the current editorial at the top of the page.Lots of viewings but no views. Good news stories they are too, with much positivity, but I guess good news is no news. - Thanks guys my mummy always told me to be shy and demure nice to see the pic's of Terrys book signing as I couldn't make it, yes its good to see some nice storys now and again instead of some of the negitive ones we have no disrespect to anyone.
- Jean and I went to the Allotment last night; we hadn't booked a table and as it was full, we were lucky to get one.
We were made very welcome and offered a table in the window - Jean could see around the restaurant and I could see what was going on outside
The owner is probably the most friendly and courteous restaurateur I have met and his waitress was equally hepful and friendly - made you feel valued and welcome.
Jean had smoked ham (Serrano) and melon and I had the garlic and chilli king prawns. Jean enjoyed her starter very much, but said the melon could have been a tad riper as it was a little hard; my king prawns were just wonderful - really good.
For main course, Jean had the Allotment burger and I had Mediterranean Lamb. The burger was certainly big and cooked well, as were the chips - a hint of pink inside the burger, but it did lack seasoning and was "missing" something, but not sure what, difficult to criticise really.
My lamb was just perfect, soft and succulent, with homous (I think) and red cabbage, with a small amount of tomato ratatouille.
You certainly couldn't fault the food or the service, and he is obviously doing everything right, as he was full up.
We looked on the web-site before we went and found the dishes and their prices, so had fore-knowledge of what we could have and how much it would all cost.
When we arrived, some of the dishes were changed and those that were still on the menu, were increased in price by a pound or so; I don't know if that was because it was Saturday night or that they had gone up anyway.
Altogether a very enjoyable experience and one that we would be very happy to have again.

Roger - Nigel, did you find my best Parker Pen in my old office or are you the one that flogged it on E-Bay. Any way how come you are knocking it down, that was to be my dam job, all the sweat I spilt in that place.
On a serious note it probably is good for the Town to see the old bus depot go and to move on, but a lot of history and memories go with it. I know it was partly a Navel base during the war, there was a plaque on the out side wall stating that. There were also a few shells that fell on the depot its self, killing bus employees that gave a lot to the war efforts, so spare a little thought & tear for them.
I am sure what is to be built will be well worth it and I look forward to seeing the other buildings coming down and Dover moving forward.

- It is refreshing to see something moving foward in a Big way for Dover with the demolition of the Bus Depot, there can only be one direction now, Onward and Upwards. Hopefully one good point raised in the meeting last night, which was are any of the companies or monies invested in the DTIZ zone not affected by the credit crunch.
Sounds like a good name for a new breakfast cereal, 'Start your day off with a bowl of 'Credit Crunch' beats muesili anyday! lol - Just to see how thank goodness work of the DTIZ is being carried out. I have now moved away from the area and it's good to see what is being done to Dover -- at long last! Dover needs re-developing! Let's start something new.

Totally agree: Dave Flynn, the restaurateur of The Allotment and his professional, talented and attentive staff are running a fantastic operation in the restaurant opposite the Maison Dieu. It's just the sort of quality Dover needs amid, with too few exceptions, a sea of dross. Having raised the bar in the town as standard bearers for quality food and drink, let's hope others take note and follow Dave's brilliant lead. - Yes drove past the old stagecoach garage at the weekend to see it almost gone bought back a memory when my Dad worked there for East kent as it was then, still cann't stop progress we hope.

- I think meetings like this one are very good it brings eveyone together in one place but still the public do not turn up to them, I am sorry I could not get there, so I can not say what was said, lets just hope it is not all talk and it can move things on that need to be done.

Maybe yout allegience is in the wrong place .. - As mentioned already by those who attended, it was a good meeting, at least the idea of it was good - if it creates more than just a talking shop then people will attend follow-up meetings.
It's all about responsibility really - responsibility for not dropping litter, not allowing your dog to foul the footpath and other places, reporting crime and "incidents" you witness etc. etc. but it's also about those various agencies doing their bit too - and with a response time that means something - and I'm not just talking about crime and ASB.
Roger - You are doing a fantastic job John (allotment Dover) It is great to know we have so many wonderful supporters in Dover, doing truly amazing things to boost our much needed funds, Merry christmas, only 70 days to go, so get your letters orfered NOW!!!!

This could be decision making at a very low level, which has\to be good.
As for the general public, it is a shame they don't use this opportunity to air views, but thats a sad fact of life that effects us all.
The sad thing then is minority views get heard but others left out.
How you get over that I don't have the answer to.

- Bern,what was my answer .I enjoy being a councillor because Im interested in people.I have always taken an interest in the community where I live.I try to represent my area and to make a difference. I join in fund raising events and at council I try to look at things in a practical way .I dont always agree with my collegues .I challenge when ever i think it necessary .I advised the young people when I ceased to enjoy being a councillor thats the time to give up .
I went to this Homeless Hostel.I was not their for photographs .I wanted to see what a difference the funding they had obtained from Supporting People had made It is always good to see what work is being done for those more vulnerable in society .If I make a difference then Im happy .. - I'v said before but will repeat it,
Sue does work hard in her ward and the council, and she has showed that she carries a personal vote when she was a LIB DEM and resigned and stood as a Conservative her vote remained stable
and that takes some doing.
I dont agree with her politics, but often we have common ground, and we have been in many a battle together, fighting the same corner.
That said there are a small number of good councillors on each of the councils who also work hard, so credit wheres its due. - Gordon might have his own hair but he sure is annoying with that thing he does with his mouth. looks like he is sticking his tongue in his chin.

Sorry about that - Sue and Keith - absolutely! The challenge is the thing, and in a nice way. And I agree Sue - whether its a job, or a council post, whatever, I always think it's time to stop when it's not fun anymore. As long as one is getting a buzz from it, it's worth doing, and the buzz is a good indicator that one is doing a decent job!!
- Howard. IM A LABOUR SUPPORTER. But mrs revell has annoyed a lot of people in St Rads with idle gossip. If she put in as much effort as cllr in her priory ward as she does spreading gossip around this area she would be dover's best cllr. I feel she lets herself and people who voted for her down.

the only people that are seen as councillors around my way are roger(because of the discount card) walkden, district, sheila amos(town), and bob royston(town) got a mention beacuse of his hot dog stall.
mind you he has so many relatives around here, that may have affected the vote.

- Keith heres my run down of the local wanna be cllrs. Mrs revell is a Huge gossip. Not that well known and a trouble maker for local residents. Mr white sadly havent met him yet! not heard nothing bad about him. Mr overden ive heard bad gossip about him but seems to have a lot of support up there. The others sadly dont think they will stand a chance. Also i do live in St Rads. So i know how bad living up there is. Also i doubt any cllr who gets in will change anything just Another one in it for the title
- I agree with a lot of your comments Beth.I have always condidered St Radigunds in my area of work I campaigned for the school and continue to be a governor .I could consider St Radigunds one day but Im not one for the dressing up brigade If the town council were more like a Parish Council with none of the frills .

Its always good to get a picture from people living in the ward where the outcome of this election will decide who represents you.
Clearly you dont have a very high opinion of candidates in this, or any other election?
You have already written off 3 of the candidates, leaving the 3 local ones,
You appear to be saying the labour candidate is not worthy, and i'm interested where your comments come from, and don't all cllrs have to act in a way of responsibility, and if , as you say she involves herself in gossip is she realy the the right candidate for the labour party(wonder if someone from the labour party might like to give a comment. - Yes I do recall the glory days of the Garden Parties in Kearsney Abbey the last and only civic occasion which remained .It was a Labour adminastration that stopped them £6000 was saved .It was very good PR wise and I recall at one event the Maclaren PR man was there .I spoke with Him and within the week Ron Dennis was sittibng at a meeting to which I was invited .It was a good way to say thank you to all those people who work for the district a real way to network .You recall I always took someone along who worked for the communuity .I think at least six people from stagecoach differn years..It was the chain brigade who spoilt it sitting in their little circles eating all the strawberry tarts .I personally used to find it very tiring endless meeting and gteeting which I enjoy .DDC no longer have a formal Annual Meeting which used to be held in the Town Hall .We are lucky to get a cup of tea now .
Standards have dropped and if i was Chairman tomorrow I would bring back the Civic Service and the Garden Party.I still have at least a dozen hats .IM still against the rbes etc ,and another thing Keith me old pal if I was Chairman I would not wear the chain at Council meetings and would not have this "please rise for the Chairman "malarky Radical i am - keith

have you done a ken and joined another one, or just given up on party politics? - I would like to comment on the negative non-factual discussions regarding the candidate Cllr Revell. As a mother of children raised in St Radigunds I have nothing but praise for her efforts as a volunteer for youth projects and activities in St Radigunds. Though too young myself to attend I am also aware of the good that she has done for the more mature members of the ward with the regular Tea-Dances held at the Triangles Centre. I am not aware of the other candidates activities in the area but can say that none of them lead youth projects to encourage less anti-social behaviour on this estate. Gossip only thrives because of those who listen to it and judging by the comments made against this Cllr members of this site are spending too much time listening to idle gossip and not enough time looking at the positive activities St Radigunds already offers.

next time you see the esteeemed lady, would you ask her to send an up to date photo to us who live in her ward, so that we can remember what she looks like. - Keep party politics out of local government. It serves no purpose. Period.
- An interesting change has happened to the night picture above, which proves if we didnt know already, that change is forever taking place all around us every day and sometimes we hardly notice.
The picture was only taken a week or so ago and since then all the lights along the main road ( Townwall St, Snargate St) have been changed quite radically. Gone are the sodium coloured lights, all have been replaced with white coloured lights of a tone you might see at a football stadium. Its a real improvement and very attractive too. Probably changed by the Highways Agency and very effective.
And as ColetteB said to me the other night.." if only we could have those along the seafront too "

- Bern the current climate may indeed have played a part in it. Most of the businesses in the Loyalty Scheme are/were small local businesses. For them to take part every year they had to find something in the region of £500 per annum as I remember. Could be a difficult sum in hard times, especially if the business is small and local.
I was in the advertising business since the hundred years war, and it is always peripheries that get axed in a downturn. One of those is/was always notoriously advertising. Its a well known phenomenon. Its a very cyclical business advertising, and hugely dependent on general economic wellbeing. The Loyalty Scheme operates in a similar way. As Roger says too, if people never mention their card, the shops taking part wont want to continue to fork out, so if there is an economic downturn, this periphery would be the first to go. Sad but probably true. - Thanks for your support guys.
A couple of points to pick up on was the cost of membership; it was not £500 a year, but (until this year, when it went up to £4.00 per week) £3.00 per week, so that's £78 for six months (26 weeks), £150 for a year.
Round about the price (or just over) of a pint of lager. Now it is/was £4.00 for new members, it's less than the price of two cups of coffee a week.
I call that cheap.
I can contact about 1500 to 1600 people via emails, so a good amount of people would know about up and coming events and the business news stories I sent out.
I gave my time for free, but at the end of the day, the vast majority of member-businesses weren't selling the scheme to their customers - and it wasn't as if it was difficult or complicated - the card was free too.
I have had bucket loads of very complimentary emails, supporting what I had tried to do and very sorry that I had had to stop it; I've had about half a dozen busienss expressing surprise and sadness that I am stopping it - some have said they will continue offering discounts.
The launch of the new Happy Chef in Snargate Street this evening will be my last official engagement as Loyalty Scheme Manager.
Maybe something will come out of this - the businesses need someone to fight for them, even if they aren't fighting for themselves.
One local businessman has offered office space, a desk, chair and a telephone for anything that may come up in the future and he's not a member of the Scheme.
Roger - Apologies Roger for getting my figures wrong. It was the previous version of the Scheme that was £500 per year for business members as I remember.
- Yes Paul, it was £500 per member when it was launched in 2005, that's probably why there were only 13 members then - and just one outlet.

Tracey (and her Dad and others) had worked very hard in getting it ready - new floor laid (it took much longer than was initially thought), redecorated and refurbished - even working right up to Friday evening; consequently, there wasn't enough time to cook the wholesome food that will be on the menu - as from today.
It's good that a new business opens in Dover, we've only heard about businesses closing recently.
It's to be lauded that someone is willing to invest their own money and time in our Town, hope Tracey and her customers make it a success.
