Britain At War Magazine

- Coastal Forces Remembered.

Recently we were approached by a very pleasant chap called Martin Mace, who is the editor of Britain at War Magazine. He had seen our Doverforum coverage of the excellent plaque unveiling ceremony on Dover Seafront, which was held in honour of the Coastal Forces who operated from HMS Wasp in WWII. Martin asked for some pictures and we were happy to co-operate. In the end he could just use the one but it is featured now on page 7 of the new magazine ( September issue) accompanying a report by Terry Sutton. It is a picture of the unveiling which was carried out by Admiral Boyce, the Lord Warden of the Cingue Ports.

The Magazine is a 70th anniversary special and is packed with all sorts of wartime pictures and stories, so very much in touch with the current celebrations and commemorations.

Must admit the magazine is new to yours truly but it is splendidly produced and is a nice buy especially at the moment. In a good magazine shop near you...out now! PB

FORE! - THE OPEN GOLF – TEEING UP FOR SUCCESS !

As we prepare to welcome The Open Championship to Sandwich in 2011, partners are working hard to make sure everything is in place for the event, which is set to bring around 200,000 visitors, and a major multi million pound boost to the area.

We are working closely with accommodation providers and local people to welcome visitors and list places to stay, and we have already had more than 9,000 hits on a dedicated website since its launch in July. We continue to work with local residents who are willing to take in Bed and Breakfast guests, who can register their details on our website. We understand that hotels and restaurants in the area are already seeing major benefits, with some already full.

The economic impact to Kent of The Open in 2003 was valued at £48m, with £17.6m in East Kent alone. This is predicted to rise for 2011, and indications are that the economic impact of the St Andrews Open in Scotland this year was around £80m.

Partner authorities, Dover District Council, Kent County Council, Canterbury City Council, Shepway District Council and Thanet District Council, are driving forward with necessary arrangements for the event. This includes work to ensure that people attending The Open and local residents are able to move as freely as possible around Sandwich, and maximising economic benefits to the area.

Cllr Nigel Collor (pictured above) Chairman of the Open Golf Project Executive said:
“Sandwich is the only location outside of the North-West of England and Scotland where The Open is played. This is an excellent opportunity for the area, bringing in millions of pounds, and giving a great chance to present Kent in the best light in the run up to the Olympics. This is a fantastic showcase for the area - the eyes of the world will be on Sandwich, and we are working hard to make sure that The Open continues to return, and that we realise the major benefits of this prestigious event for the future.”

Following on from the comments below most notably from Terry Nunn on the Connaught Cleaning and Maintenance situation, regarding them going bust, I couldnt resist this one....

DDC Bigwig conflab! Nigel Collor in panic calls Paul Watkins...and the conversation goes something like this.

"Paul Ive just heard the news about Connaught?

I told you squeezing them til their pips popped out wasnt a good move. Now they've copped it and gone bust, leaving us high and dry with no loo cleaning facility right across Dover.

And now Terry Nunn is insisting on that bl**dy doverforum that you and I don marigolds, bibs, and rush round town with our domestic loo brushes firmly clasped, and start cleanin' all the bogs before another furore breaks out!!"

The PaulW response goes like this...

"Calm yourself Nigel. Ive got lots of marigolds and loo brushes and I can let you have those straight away!
Call me when the loos are all done!!"

The picture shows Nigel just a day or two ago on Dover Seafront ( pic Colette Boland) PB.
