2 May 2012Ghost Ship!
This beautiful ship slipped in and out of harbour almost un-noticed yesterday. One minute she was there lanquishing mysteriously and quietly in the dawn mist, and then before you knew it, she was gone again, out in mid channel and gathering pace through the gloom. As far as we can tell she was an unscheduled visitor and a first time caller. Forum experts named her as the Star Flyer. We were hoping to capture her in full sail but just after the picture above was taken she vanished away quietly into the mid channel mist.
Armed Robbery: The Co-op Robbed!
Police are appealing for information following an armed robbery, which took place at the Co-op store in Lower Road, River in Dover on friday night (4 May). Shortly before the store closed at 10pm, four men entered the store and threatened staff, stealing cigarettes and a quantity of cash. The amount stolen is currently unknown as are the exact weapons used in the robbery.
The suspects were all wearing high visibility jackets and their faces were covered. After stealing the items, the four men swiftly left the store on foot.
Officers are particularly keen to speak with a man who came in to purchase a pot of jam, shortly before the incident occurred, as he may have seen the suspects. Anyone with information about the incident should contact Kent Police on 101 or Kent Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 quoting crime reference ZY/12356/12.
Extra Police News:
More warnings for illegal off road motorbikers..
In the past two weeks more official warnings have been issued to four riders. Ages were between 16 and 24 in two seperate incidents. One noted spot for illegal riding is the former Tilmanstone Colliery site in Pike Road, Eythorne. The short message is..dont do it!
These four riders have been issued with section 59 warnings under the Road Traffic Act. The warnings mean that if the riders are stopped again and found to be causing a nuisance, they risk prosecution and having their bikes seized.
Also, in some cases prosecutions will follow if warnings are unheeded.
A 34-year-old man was summonsed to appear before Canterbury Magistrates’ Court on 16 April where he was fined £600 and had his driving licence endorsed with six points. He was stopped by police in The Street, Ash, on 11 October 2011 using an unregistered pit bike without insurance.
Sergeant Chris Gurney from the Deal Neighbourhood Team said: "A significant proportion of the calls we get about anti-social behaviour are from people complaining about the nuisance caused by illegal riding. Not only does the noise disturb the peace and cause annoyance to many local residents, it is dangerous and unlawful. My officers will continue to intervene with nuisance riders, and as these recent incidents show, you could have your bike seized and be prosecuted."
If you want to report anti-social behaviour contact Kent Police on 101.
Sandys in Brussels to Lobby EU Commission on Live Exports and Fisheries
Friday May4: Laura Sandys MP will today be travelling to Brussels to lobby the European Commission on two important issues facing the region; live exports from the Port of Ramsgate and upcoming changes in fisheries policy.
Laura said: “I am very pleased to have secured a meeting on the subject of live animal transportation with Dr Vassallo, the Cabinet Member at the European Commission responsible for this area of legislation. I will be meeting with him on Friday to put to him the views of the many people in Thanet who have contacted me raising their deep concerns about the terrible live export trade and related animal welfare issues. I have been working closely with Compassion in World Farming who have been running an excellent campaign and I have invited one of their experts to attend this meeting with me.
“Just two months ago, the European Parliament formally adopted a new position on live transportation journey times which calls on the European Commission to establish a maximum 8 hour journey limit for animals transported in the EU for the purpose of being slaughtered. I will be following up on this resolution with Dr Vassallo and requesting that action be taken to address this new position. We need new EU legislation and also better EU-wide safeguards to ensure the welfare of any animals being transported.
“I will also be meeting with a representative of the European Commission to discuss the forthcoming reform of the Common Fisheries Policy which will affect each and every one of our local fishermen. Top of my list for discussion are the pressing issues of discards and quotas. Whilst live exports and fisheries policy are two very different issues both are of real concern for local people and I think it is vitally important that I go to Brussels and ensure that the Commission is fully aware of the impact that both have on our local area.”

Micropubbing in Deal......
A few days ago some of our Doverforum teamsters dropped in on Deal’s newest establishment …the Just Reproach micropub. This is the brainchild of one of our tip top forumites Mark Robson. Mark has been with us here on Doverforum engaging in the various debates for an age, since our early days in fact, and during all that time he has been a highly respected school teacher, and if I’m not mistaken even a head teacher.
Mark did his bit educating our youngsters and no mistake.
But then…with a whoosh and a shake of a lambs tail, Mark suddenly abandoned all that in double quick time and fetched up in Deal in this new micropub venture. It was quite a career turnaround to say the least.
But…What is a Micropub I hear you ask? Well these Micropubs are springing up all over the country and they herald a return to simpler times and simpler values, a back to basics if you like. They shun all the frills of modern pubs, no jukeboxes, no plasma TV’s, no fruit machines, no ready meals, just honest company from simple folk who enjoy honest real ales and ciders.
To quote Mark from his website.."We have continued to provide a changing beer menu and have sourced from the Orkneys (802 miles away ) to Ripple (3 miles away) in an attempt to provide a diverse range, reflecting local ingredients and tradition as well as the brewer’s passion for his/her product.
There are an ever increasing number of microbreweries and we hope to source from as many as we can over the coming months and years.."
Already the Just Reproach has been featured in The Sunday Times and on ITV's Meridian News ...so it's all happening for Mark and his daughter Bronwen. Top picture and words by Paul Boland. Second picture by Colette Boland. That's ColetteB in the top picture with top man Mark Robson himself.
