Flying the Flag for the Armed Forces

A Flag Raising Event was held outside the Town Council offices on monday to honour and support our service personnel, those brave men and women who are currently serving and those who have served in the past.

Similar events were carried out right across the country on monday in the lead up to Armed Forces Day on the 30th of June.

Speeches were made by the Chairman of Dover District Council Cllr Sue Nicholas, and the Town Mayor of Dover Cllr Anne Smith. A small group of invited representatives were in attendance as you can see in the pictures. The short flag raising ceremony was carried out by the Rev Andy Bawtree from the River Parrish. Picture above left shows the Rev Andy Bawtree enjoying a nice cup of tea after the ceremony with DDC Chairman Cllr Sue Nicholas.

Picture left shows the two speechmakers from the two Councils. On the left is Cllr Sue Nicholas and on the right of picture Cllr Anne Smith Mayor of Dover. Picture on right shows the leader of the Labour Group locally Cllr Gordon Cowan, with the newly selected candidate to fight the next election for Labour, Clair Hawkins.

The sun eventually shone yesterday despite earlier miserable conditions which threatened to spoil the various events around town. Hardly visible for most of the day as she nestled against the harbour wall was the Costa Romantica. This is the same line that suffered the tragedy of the Costa Concordia early in the year. Here we have the Romantica, or neo Romantica, as she leaves last evening in the strong colourful slanting sun. Doesn't Dover make a fab destination for these cruise liners.

Armed Forces Day special event Pencester....

Here are some pictures from the Special Armed Forces Event which was held in Pencester Gardens over the weekend. The event drew great crowds in reasonably good weather. As ever with all outdoor events of this type, the right weather is vital and as you can see we were fortunate on saturday when the pictures were taken. All enjoyed it.

The event attracted a great turnout and apart from all the stalls and military vehicles... the music had us jitterbugging right down to our boots.
"Pardon me boy..is that the chattttenoooga choo choo.."

Pictures: They were taken first thing on saturday. We were there just in time to see Charlie Elphicke MP open up the event at 10am sharp. Top left shows Charlie being greeted by the events leading light and fellow forumite Barry Williams to the right. BarryW is always to the right !! Righthandside picture shows Cllr Ronnie Philpott, there with her lovely dog to help raise funds for the Sea Cadets. Ronnie is currently Deputy Mayor of Dover but has only recently finished her stint as Mayor.

Picture above left shows Charlie 'accepting the colours' at the opening ceremony. I think that's the correct term but if it isn't someone will let us know. Many thanks as ever in advance. The picture below shows the Mobile Naafi Canteen first thing. All clean fresh and tidy and ready for its first customer of the day.

There is great coverage from all the guys in the forum..much more info and with excellent pictures too..
