June Gilbert of Bromley. France to England
DOB unknown but she was 21 when she swam in 1958. The Observer was John Unicume Wood.
There is an article describing the last mile or so of her swim called "Icing on the Cake". It was published in the 1962 ASA magazine "Kentolian". It describes how June took four hours to complete the last mile due to strong currents and a sudden strong south westerly gale. She landed somewhere near Walmer Castle at 17.15hrs and was the first Kent swimmer to conquer the Channel.
