The much-applauded influx of cheap labour has seen a huge downturn in people with the right skills and qualities being employed in care and support jobs. In reality what this means is hundreds (thousands?) of vulnerable sick people being "cared" for by people who do not speak their language. Can you begin to comprehend how lonely and scared people must be when their own language skills and/or/mobility and/or independence are impeded enugh to need someone - often a stranger - to assist and tha stranger does not understand what they are saying or what they need and is unable to offer the basic communication that person needs to thrive? And that is in residentialand nursing homes as well as "care at home". I don't doubt that many of the carers are well-motivated (not all!) but there is no substitute for proper communication and understanding.
