Whilst I have every sympathy for the families of those killled and injured and the injured service personnel; this is frankly a fairly inevitable consequence of the last 30 odd years in Afghanistan.

Back when the Soviet Union put its troops in to Afghanistan at the request of the then Afghan government the USA through the offices of the CIA decided it needed to use all its means to take the Soviets on. To do this they sought out and supported the Taliban and encouraged Osama bin Laden to do likewise; this support included not only weapons, explosives and cash; but also CIA military advisers and trainers. Eventually, through this aid and assistance as well as the perseverance of the Taliban and their Arab allies the Soviets were worn down and pulled out. Unfortunately this left a vacuum that was filled by the Taliban and their radical interpretation of Islam, further they then having got rid of the Soviets turned their bile and venom on their previous paymasters. If the US had not funded the Taliban to fight the Soviets, would we be in this mess today? I do not know but I am guessing maybe not.
