Two things are needed Andy, a change of wind direction and rain. With a rather large "High" over Europe at the moment, and no wind to shift it, it could be days or weeks before the dust moves.
And don't forget, as the above photo shows, the volcano is still spewing out its contents into the atmosphere. The volcanic dust is stuck at 35000ft which is of course, the height jet propelled aircraft optimally fly at. They cannot fly lower as that would require them to burn more fuel, and that would make transatlantic or long flights next to impossible.
If regional or domestic flights went ahead the skies would quickly become clogged with aircraft and the risk of collision would be unacceptably high, plus the higher levels of pollution would probably cause an outcry.
