On hot days in the summer the green woodpecker visits our lawn for the ants. Today there was a pair of green woodpeckers, they came right up to the french windows and looked in at us, seemed very tame. Then one of them stood opposite a collared dove on the bird bath and had a staring-match and stand-off with it. What huge powerful beaks they have (the green ones I mean). I think they must have had a nest nearby. They really do have a good go at the ants in the grass, and sometimes stay quite a while having a feed.
