Every year I attend 2/3 financial conferences and have just got back from a 2 day event at Gatwick with 100 top financial advisers and industry speakers.
Something different in the speeches this year, very different. Normally politics is avoided, yes discussion of budgetary and economic matters take place but not in any way political. There is usually a great deal of talk about new Government initiatives and policies and the impact on our clients, not this year.
This year just about every speaker was telling a joke or two at the expense of Gordon Brown. His financial sector and economic policies rubbished as never before. I have never heard such scorn and contempt expressed for any PM in a business environment before. Not in 20 years of attending this kind of thing.
Conversely there was a great deal of serious discussion of what an incoming Conservative Government will do within 12 months. Speaker after speaker was dropping George Osborne's name, referring to meetings to discuss policy issues and all lobbying by retail financial industry groups is now targeted at the Conservatives, Labour are now ignored in that way. It was the impact of Conservative policies that featured.
A great deal of discussion was had about the rebuilding of the economy based on a renewed savings and investment culture, instead of one of debt - referring to a recent and important speech by Osborne.
The wind has changed direction.

Do you really expect to start a discussion with this nonsense, why would we bother to reply to some McBride-like bull**** sent out by the Looney Party. It does not warrant being taken seriously. Typical desperation.

Very interesting post Barry, sounds like with the conservatives in power things will in fact improve. When you get a meeting of so many financial advisors and heads of industry and they are all in agreement, what they say cannot be ignored. Let us hope that they are right and our country can do something positive about the awful debt the labour government have got us into.
Sid I'm afraid it is you who sounds desperate and a little blinkered if you refer to the thoughts of so many people far more experienced in finance than you or I as nonsense.
There's always a little truth behind every "Just kidding", a little emotion behind every "I don't care" and a little pain behind every "I'm ok".

As I know what eleven grand being divided by four years is I may be just as experienced. I repeat, it does not warrant being taken seriously. Typical desperation.

not quite as simple as barry puts it.
financial advisers and others in that industry are reliant on people building up savings.
just self interest.

The whole point howard is the sheer degree of bile directed towards the Government. I have never experienced anything like it in a commercial arena. It rivalled a Conservative conference for that. Normally politics is avoided and yes, there have never been many Labour supporters in my industry but even so....to have the sitting Government to be dismissed as a dangerous irrelivance tells us a lot.
Incidentally howard, there were many types of adviser and industry representatives there. Not all are heavily into the savings market, some grew fat on Labour's debt fueled economy, others like me are more investment people.
Worth pointing out that the banks received a fair bit of stick too.

In the light of mnot wanting gto upseyt any posters I cannot just sit back and allow the complete rubbish from Barryw.
As Sid says, its dribble, utter rubbish.
Was Maggie never unpopular then?
was john major not unpopiular then?
was IDS at the time not unpopular then?
Come on BAZ its attacks on the Labour govt and of course in the present climate its to be expected, but lets get honest its desperate politics as Sid says.

You simply do not get the point I am making.... unpopularity is not the issue, it is a matter of who, where, what and why...dribble, rubbish, no is is a factual account of a 2 day business conference.
Commercial conferences may have the odd political joke but never have I ever before been to one where there have been such consistent attacks and sheer bile against both the personality of leading Government figures and their policies. It is totally unpresedented. Combine that with the way Labour have been written off for the next election and the assumption from non-political people that Conservative policies will soon be imposed is very telling.
We now see the Governor of the Bank of England coming out against Government policies in an unprecedents manner. What does that too tell you about Brown's authority.

Keef I think Ive answered the one about bringing back the politics page a few times now following your various requests. basically without going into a long spiel too few people were posting on it in the end so it wasnt worth it. It did start well but eventually only a few posted on there in tit for tat type mode. So it was better to centralise. I know centralising it wasnt everyone's cup of tea but there are still plenty of threads of a non political nature so there is entertainment for all.
If only the full membership would do their bit and post, thats my concern. Not everyone is pulling their weight and with a 'club only' philosophy thats fairly important.

that is the problem here, you see names of people online reading posts, hardly ever contributing.
a few just use it when they have something to advertise.
