Have you ever been to a proper auction? We went to Kent Auctions today in Folkestone and had a look.We also bumped into quite a few people from Dover including former Town Councillor Paul Verrill who was looking rather chipper.and it was good to see him.
There was a lot of tat(in my opinion) at the auction but alot of good stuff,Mrs JHG bought some of posh Barry's cast off from his Crown Jewels and I bought some prints of Dover.
It was good fun and will list the the next couple.
Antiques and Fine Art,Sat21st March starting 10.00
Victorian and Later effects Sat 04th April starting at 10.00
They even had a punch bag for Queen (Vic )toria.
If you knew what I know,we would both be in trouble!

I love those kind of places, but we don't have any room to put any of them so don't visit, as I may be tempted.
I'd love a good quality long-case (GrandFather) clock and a John (or Thomas) Carey celestial/terrestial Globe - beautiful pieces, expensive too now I guess.

Yes I've been to one or two auctions in the past and bought a lovely applewood 'art nouveau' dresser a while back, it was great fun bidding for it. Whats this I hear John, Barry selling off the family jewels? I'll have a delicate word in his not so delicate ear.

Mowll....hmmm....I wonder if he is related to Mary Mowll who was Arthur Beresford Pite (architect whom I have carried out much research on with Dover connections) wife? The Mowll's were quite a prominent family in Dover and had involvement with the Cinque of Ports and others had a coal merchants.

Thanks John.
I believe they are distant relatives Colette, I contacted them last year a couple of times but never heard anything.

Bit of a bonus,Mrs JHG bought a small french carriage clock, and thought she had paid over the top for it,£40,she took it into the repairs to see if the damage was worth fixing and we got a shock. The damage to repair would be £200,but the man said it is a fine clock and worth ..... wait for it......over £700.
