    BANK HOLIDAY WEEKEND CELEBRATIONS

Dover District Council is welcoming a successful Bank Holiday weekend of celebrations and is thanking the community and partner agencies for their support - with over 1,000 people seeing the film Grease in Connaught Park, and over 2,000 people attending fireworks on Dover seafront, as part of the handover celebrations despite the weather.

A special 30th anniversary showing of the musical Grease was enjoyed in Connaught Park on Friday (22 August), with visitors singing and dancing in the park. The outdoor cinema event was organized by Dover District Council and followed the celebration of the 125th anniversary of Connaught Park earlier this summer.

Following the success of Team GB at the Beijing Olympics, a day of events was held on Dover seafront on Sunday (24 August) to celebrate the Olympic handover from Beijing to London. The event for the local area was organized by DDC, in close cooperation with Dover Town Council and with the support of Dover Harbour Board. Despite the wind and rain, a range of events took place, including a Street Athletics event, and Olympic 2012 flags were raised on Dover Seafront and Deal Pier. The flag was rowed ashore at Dover by potential future Olympian Hannah Moon, and Deal Tri Club and Dover Roadrunners ran a 2012 flag to Deal, with a 1948 Olympic Torch. Dover District Council is a key partner within the Kent Campaign for the 2012 Games, a partnership led and managed by Kent County Council. DDC is working with KCC and other partners to campaign to bring the Olympic torch through Dover in 2012.
