Some really interesting article`s appeared in this month`s Geographical magazine, and I`ve chosen one of them as we`ve been in St Patrick`s Day mood on here. With the Google Earth post`s on here, viewing round our land mass, what about a nice cruise along the world`s sea and ocean bed`s, and viewing the countless thousand`s upon thousand`s of ship wreck`s amongst other things? Wow, the ultimate journey left to do on this planet. Should all be possible within the next hundred year`s, (sigh). Anyway, going back to Ireland, it will be the first country in the world to have all it`s surrounding territorial water`s mapped out, and should be finished by 2026. They already have more than 10,000 wreck`s on their database. Imagine all the countless wrecks from the many centuries of warfare in the English channel, with a few more Saxon ship`s I`d imagine. Mind blowing stuff. P.S. Of course the water`s are very murky all around us, and it will be basic outline`s of a wreck, but at least some maybe identified, and then given a map reference number for further study.

Those little humps are called drumlins, which are small rounded hill`s, which were formed during the last ice age, and then covered by rising sea level. They are now partly or wholly submerged in Clew Bay, County Mayo. The magazine is currently available in WHS, but do try and have a read if you can, even if you don`t buy it. Also, picture`s and `facts`, about the Haiti earthquake and much more.

dont forget the viking longships colin, our scandinavian friends spent a long time warring with the local irish chieftains,
besides the drumlins that you mention, the coastline of ireland and the irish sea are most inhospitable.
imagine how many wrecks are hidden there.

Yes Howard, I bet there`s quite a selection on the seabed of every kind of vessel that`s ever sailed the sea`s. Apparently, there are 8 German U boat`s in Irish water`s which were scuttled by the Royal Navy after the war, which brings me back to the other post about raising a U boat for display. (These scuttled one`s wouldn`t be classed as war grave`s). Look nice displayed in the WASTED Wellington dock.

Colin, any boat raised from our waters would be of historical interest, if only because they would be the ships of our failed enemies, therefore reminders of a glorious English heritage of defeating all and sundry. I'm all for that!!! Rule Britannia etc. (sits back and waits for angry responses from colonials)

Thanks Sid, and yes any boat would do, and again I mention the Wellington dock, I gazed at it again this morning thinking what a waste. There must be some old vessel around either restored or needing restoration that could be accommodated there, subject to nobody getting greedy with charges? Nice attraction right in the car park under everyone`s nose`s.

sid
there is an english vessel sunk deliberately in our harbour.
Yeah, I think we were trying to give the oppo a helping hand; that's something you can afford to do when so superior to the enemy. It was a vessel we didn't need anyway.
