I can do no more than quote the excellent Auberon Waugh from some two decades ago:-
Children of the chronically unemployed in 1993 have colour television, hot water, plenty of food and, usually heat...When I think of the extreme cold of the houses I grew up in, the genuine shortage of food and clothing (and mine was a rich and privileged background), I can see that those who affect to be indignant about the plight of the poor in England are concerned only to find something they are indignant about to demonstrate their own moral superiority.
