  Turkey's application for EU membership should be considered in light of only there ability to meet the membership criteria, all else is either
  
  a) an internal issue for the EU to manage e.g. Greek antipathy to Turkey; or
  
  b) a criteria for entry e.g. transitional arrangements for freedom of movement, joining the euro, signing up to Shengen etc.
  
  It should be remembered that Turkey is a modern secular state that has battled long and hard with not only Islamic fundamentalists, but also various separatist and radical groups. They are one of the few countries to have banned not only the veil but also the headscarf in public buildings.
