that wonderful old blue institution, the carlton club, has finally agreed to allow women members.
ms anne widdecombe can now go up to the bar and buy a drink.
i do wonder if this has taken equality of the sexes too far.

Not from where she's moved to Howard - Dartmoor and she's standing down as an MP.
A great Lady, with loads of common sense, that is sadly very lacking nowadays. Shame she didn't get any higher in the Conservative Party- she was very popular with the electorate, but not so with fellow MP's.
Roger
Might have had something to do with her personality emulating the effect of fingernails on a chalk board.................annoyingly I agreed with much of what she said. Shoot me now.

Its good that the Carlton Club have done this. Absurd that Mrs T was only allowed to be a Honary Member rather than a full member like all previous Conservative Prime Ministers. Well done Anne for being the first to break down the barriers. As an MP, agree or disagree with her, you have to admit she is a character and these are in short supply. When she leaves parliament at the next election Parliament and our public life will be all the poorer.

it is funny how miss widdecombe is always associated with common sense.
i always remember her saying that common sense was just a load of prejudices built up over the years.
i think that was the most interesting thing she ever said.
i did admire her for her views on hunting with dogs and also taking a stand against the church of england.
both issues alienated her from her party.
i could never actually listen to anything she said on the tv or radio, her voice used to grate and the hectoring manner
meant that the mute button came into effect.

interesting that it is mostly lefties that admired dear miss widdecombe, keith and john on here, and i remember a chat
with ex mayoress margaret(keefs mum) sansum about the lady, she had great respect for her too.
i do rather suspect that the switch to catholicism swung it though.

Hey, howard, its just that more lefties have chosen to post on this thread.
Me, I disagree with her over Michael Howard, foxhunting and 42 days and not to mention religion, particularly annoyed at her propping up Brown on 42 days which was a close run thing.... But I still admire her robust attitude. When I met her though I did find that outside of politics she had no conversation....

Read the (Daily) Express and she has lots of common-sense things to say that are nothing to do with politics - directly.

they did a documentary on her once, part of which was set on a cruise ship, where she had booked a holiday.
she was "persuaded" to give an after dinner talk to the other holiday makers.
the moment she finished, a trolley load of her autobiographies came into view, the unfortunate passengers had to get past the books and her to get to the exit.
i have to agree with barry on this one, her personality is zilch when confronted with other human beings.
fingernails on a chalk board..............eeeekk!! God Love Her!
