    Probably a drop in the ocean though but this is what happens when excise duty is so much higher in the UK. It's not only cigarettes but also booze and diesel. Because these items, and others, are so much cheaper across the channel our own legitimate outlets cannot compete and go to the wall.

    If duty rates were "normalised" right across the EU then we might find that income to the exchequer would actually increase even though UK duty rates would have to be reduced.

    In a manner of speaking the smuggling problem has actually been encouraged by government policy!
