Terrible news if true that the steps will no longer be accessible.

Chalk that has fallen from Dover's White Cliffs on Sunday and Monday has blocked the stairs to Langdon Bay.
Coastguard Paul Evans said it unlikely they can ever be used again and he has issued a safety warning for people walking from St Margaret's Bay to Langdon to make sure they check the tides because they can no longer use the stairs.
What he described as a "small fall of chalk" happened between Sunday and Monday directly underneath the Coastguard Station, between Langdon Cliffs and Dover.
He said: "Chalk from the Langdon staircase fell and the bottom section has been affected.
Kent County Council has had to erect a fence to stop people going through.

There's a picture in this article, the fall is down near the beach. Hopefully some sort of staircase solution can be achieved.

That's a good thing I guess, if it prevents the regular occurrences of people getting cut off by the tide or climbing up/down the cliff and failing.

Did a circular town / South Foreland walk earlier. On my way back descended into Fan Hole and met a couple looking for the steps, which they'd overrun by a good mile. Re-directed them, of course. Climbed out of Fan Hole, sat down for a drink and, blow me down, another group asked if I knew where the steps were. Re-directed them, of course. The thing is, each of these groups had a NT map on which the steps are clearly marked. Heaven knows what they'd do if they found themselves somewhere without signs, footpaths or passersby. Is everybody lost nowadays?

Further evidence of Dover's Elgar connection. Judging by his appearance, the great man must have modelled for this warning near the South Foreland lighthouse in his later years; the age of the sign attests to this hypothesis.
