I've just had a leaflet through the door asking me to put out some clothes for collection for use in "Third World Countries" by a firm called SHC Collections Ltd.
I would suggest that you don't give them anything. Google the name and you will see what I mean. They were exposed on a Radio 4 programme a while ago.
The give away is that they are a profit making limited company and not a registered charity.

Yes thank you Terry. I just got home from work and saw the leaflet and was going to donate a load of clothes to them til I read your post - I shall now take my stuff to the hospice shop as I had originally intended. Some people will stoop to any level, well done for bringing this to our attention.
There's always a little truth behind every "Just kidding", a little emotion behind every "I don't care" and a little pain behind every "I'm ok".

these leaflets are very clear that it is for a profit making organisation.
people still assume that it is for charitable purposes, no idea why.

First bit that got me was that it says:

Which made me thing twice....
Been nice knowing you :)

After some emails going missing I've had a response from DDC.
1 A license is required for these house to house collections.
2 The company involved didn't have one.
3 DDC say that given the type of company and the way it operates it would be unlikely that they would get one.
To my mind therefore these collections were illegal.

not as simple as that.
the bags i have had delivered never claimed to be acting for a charity.
in fact, the leaflets had company registration numbers on.
if people do not read the literature then they deserve better.
having said that, i do not know what the leaflet that terry had, said.
If a license is needed to collect and they didn't have one it appears clear. If it is only charities who need a license and we are the mugs who didn't read the small print fair enough we should have, but organisations also have a duty to be clear about their purpose and origins.

they are clear actually, it is householders that make assumptions.
i remember one clearly stating "not everyone can afford to buy new clothes, these goods will go into our shops in eastern europe".

Need to ask the question on the doorstep
have you got a license, that normally gets them off the doorstep
another question could be do you have identiofication badge
