18 May 2008 17:372287Being a grandfather I sometimes look at the grandchildren's comics and scratch my head in disbelief.
However, on Saturday I bought a reprint "Eagle" Annual. Among the adverts were those for knives, Webley air pistols and BSA air rifles (kill rats at 30 yards!).
Not unusual in the '50's but a definate no - no now!
TerryQuis custodiet ipsos custodes? - 18 May 2008 17:412289I have just been reading The Telegraph online, and one fella made the valid point that it's not the knives (as you point out, many small boys caried knives, swiss army etc years ago) but the people who carry them, and the lack of consequence.

Television wasnt commonplace and much of our entertainment was simple.I was desperate to get my hands on one of those guns, I kid you not, even under the age of 10. My mother was having none of it and this was in Ireland too !!...whats wrong with having a gun thought I? there all doing it!!
But no, my mother stoodfast to her miserable anti-gun position and I remained gun free, much to my disappointment. I had to make do with marbles or some other trivia. Sigh.. it remains one of my great regrets.
Im talking of course of air pistols not AK47's
email: dover7@msn.com - 19 May 2008 08:512305When we were young and idealistic and first had the kids we banned guns from the house - our son, then tiny but already strong minded and assertive, just made them out of twigs, lego, plastercine, anything. We decided we might as well go with the flow and at least retain some control over the quality of toys he had!! And so far, even in teenage, he has not developed any violent tendencies.........
