This is one Phil that stirs up all sorts of emotive responses. It was featured on TV this week too, like it was some sort of terrible situation for us here. But is it?
They are stuck between a rock and a hard place in Calais on this. On one hand they have a third world village right on their doorstep, with people living in makshift shelters in total squalor, similar to what we used to see on our TV screens showing the worst African or Indian poverty. Its an abysmal way to live, and abysmal to have people living like that in affluent Calais, disease and dysentry is rife amongst these people in Calais, obviously they have no running water, no toilets and so on, so you can imagine the horrors.
Something has to be done.
The downside of course is that if you build some sort of sheltered accomodation, that it will attract people from all over...a warm bed, a meal, etc and all with the added yearning prospect of reaching England.
On balance it hasnt worked getting rid of the old centre so I think its inevitable that a new one will be built and probably should be built.

The underlying problem here is the Shengen Agreement

The French have the power under the agreement to remove illegal immigrants to the country from which they entered France; they choose not to and implicitly encourage these people to enter the UK as we are not members of the agreement and cannot remove illegals back to France.
