  just to add to vic's post, if you have any old person close by, always have a quick glance to if there are milk bottles on the doorstep or post/newspapers sticking out of their letter box.
  both are tell tale signs of possible problems.
  
  with regard to garden birds, they will appreciate saucers/bowls of warm water being made available and replenished regularly. most of their usual drinking holes are iced up.
  
  if you have a bird table, anything fatty, like left over bacon or suet will be appreciated.
  
  finally there is a shortage of insects available for the a la carte type of bird, so any extra food will go down well.
