I suspect they will be built. What Ed did not point out are two things about Tory policy, 1/ The budget is protected for at least the first year of a Tory Government and 2/ They will hold a much belated Defence Review designed to determine the defence needs and structures, along with funding, to meet future and immediate threats.
I should also say that there is a great deal of commitment to Defence and the Armed Forces in the Conservative Government. Labour have only one MP who has done any significant service in the forces (Eric Joyce) while there are many in Tory ranks which will be reflected in the Government and that includes several who have served in Iraq and Afghanistan. You can expect very different attitudes to Defence from a Tory administration as a result with a much higher priority.
My own view is that looking at both immediate and medium term threats it will be clear that power projection and highly mobile forces will be essential. That means that carriers with the ability to provide a floating airfield in otherwise difficult to reach places will be central to supporting our highly mobile forces.
There must, however, be significant changes to forces procurement to save money within the existing defence budget as additional cash to meet commitments will not be available. Spending on Defence should be the highest spending priority,
