LORD WARDEN OFFICIALLY OPENS NEW CAFÉ-BAR
FOR DEAL PIER
A stunning new-look café-bar for Deal Pier, as part of a £1.35m transformation for this key local landmark, is officially opened by the Lord Warden of the Cinque Ports, Admiral the Lord Boyce today (21 Nov) - and is open to the public from tomorrow (22 Nov).
This major project has been completed by Dover District Council as part of a programme of works to Deal Pier for the future of the town and the district. The new café-bar features timber frames, edge walls made of glass and a range of environmentally-friendly features. The project was designed by renowned architects Niall McLaughlin, and construction was carried out by Barwick Construction Ltd. The café-bar is being run by local businessman Mr Jasin Kaplan. A range of improvements to the pier also includes upgraded utilities, with new lighting and some new surfacing.
The Chairman of Dover District Council has invited a range of guests from across the community to attend the official opening from 3pm to 5pm today. The new café-bar for Deal Pier will be open to the public from 8am on Saturday (22 November).
Construction on this major project began on site this April. This followed an architectural design competition, a public consultation, and the selection of a winning design by a Jury Panel. More than 950 responses from the public were taken into consideration.
Deal's present pier was opened by the Duke of Edinburgh on 19 November 1957, and DDC celebrated the pier's golden anniversary in style with a colourful fireworks display on the pier and a special exhibition in November last year. Deal Pier was named Pier of the Year 2008 by the National Piers Society earlier this year.
Cllr Nigel Collor, DDC Cabinet Member for Access and Property Management said: "We are honoured to welcome Admiral the Lord Boyce on this memorable occasion, and are very pleased to see these major improvements coming to fruition with the opening of this stunning new café-bar, which also provides a number of local jobs. This work represents a major boost for Deal seafront, for the town and for the district, and will help us all enjoy the full advantages that make the pier area in Deal so attractive to visitors and local people."

19:349644Maybe I am being disingenious but why would you get invites?

19:529647lol!
Ross Ive answered the question really in my original post..pictures ( and indeed a report). I very often get invites from the councils to do this or that. The Councils like to get their message out and they like coverage which is fair enough and it works well for everyone....but not this time. Perhaps being in Deal ..etc etc. I was for example recently at the glorious occasion of the bus shelter demolition..!
I am very keen myself to bring as much coverage as I can manage to keep this website thriving as a 'social' magazine. Most people seem to like the coverage we do, fortunately. So it was a tad disappointing not to be able to get pictures today, but I'll get over it. But a pity for our readers who miss out on seeing the event.

20:069648Didn't get an invite either, but from what I gather there were a few problems, like when it was switched on the lecky blew.
If you knew what I know,we would both be in trouble!

the powers that be like to use this forum for their own benefit.
the pictures that they want us to see are available much faster on here, and are usually better.
i hate to say this, but our local press are lokking like dinosaurs in comparison.
if they done a bit more campaigning on local issues, and published findings in detail then they would continue to have a local niche.
they must have realised a few years back that a local internet forum run as a magazine would be a threat, but have failed to respond to the challenge.
