Barry, if the UK broke up, one argument that would possibly be put forward is that England and Scotland would continue to be united by way of the European Union.
The laws on trade and freedom of movement within the EU, and the common parliament in Brussels, would probably render useless the monarchy's role in England and Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, in the eyes of many, and the end of "being British" would leave a deep scar.
Then, as many of us would continue to call ourselves British anyway, even if the present constitution of the Uk broke up, this term would no longer have any connection to the Windsor family.
Sorry, Barry, but here is a theme where titles on paper and sentiments of the common people differ.
I don't believe that many in England would believe in the Windsor monarchy if the UK broke up.
It would be a tremendous blow to the popularity of the Windsors, and it seems we are moving in that direction.
