12:3812790Uses for Dover and Deal Woolies - how about opening them up as farmers' and produce markets - perhaps for local allotmenteers too?
Think the Goods Shed near Canterbury West station. Could even give them the suitably agricultural name "Woolies Farmers Markets" or "Woolies Farm Shops"!
Why not? Would be fab.
Discuss.

14:0312791Andrew I think thats a very interesting idea. Im not aware of a Farmers Market in Canterbury but by the sounds of what you say it looks to be successful. Im sure something of this nature would go down well in Dover although do Farmers Markets stay open 6/7 days a week. I dont know.
Another point...is there anybody in Dover that could work to make this happen. It seems to be nobodys remit right now. With TCM gone and a weakened Chamber of Commerce minus its leader, Im not sure whose remit this falls within. It would be nice to think that there is somebody within our community working towards these goals.

14:3512794PaulB - It is too early to speak about the way forward for the Chamber, Ray's funeral is not until tomorrow.
Do not concern yourself about a 'weakened' Chamber. I wont say any more for now.

14:4812796Still wouldn't be surprised if a discount store like Netto or Wilkinson try to get into either side.... that or Tesco.....
Been nice knowing you :)

15:2912799Wilkinsons or Tesco Express/Metro would be fine too as an alternative.
The Goods Shed, PaulB, in Canterbury is great. Very vibrant and open all week and weekends. I suggest you check it out - you'll love it. Local produce and local producers - it's the way forward as this country takes several giant leaps back to the future, hopefully taking heed of a better past on the way.

16:4512801Thanks for that chaps. Very interesting. I hadnt heard of this place before and its certainly worth a bit of a galavant on a sunday just to check it out. Im not much of a shopper personally but one hears so many good things about Canterbury these days. They seem to be on the up despite the recession.

18:0312804Considered having lunch at the Goods Shed once. The pigeons flying round inside put me off a bit, and it wasn't a tip from the previous customer that was left on table.

18:1612805From memory the Goods Shed is based in a rather large car park next to or near the Station and in a reasonably quiet road. Dover Woolies isn't in anywhere near the same location. The Wilkinsons idea has legs though, very similar to their location in Canterbury.

19:0412811there is already a weekly farmers market at capel, until recently another one up at river.
not forgetting we have an actual farm on the edge of dover that provides 7 days a week for those looking to purchase high quality local grub.

19:2712813But a lot of people do not want to travel to Farthingloe, they prefer to shop on foot when buying local produce. lol! re pigeons Terry, that would definitely put me off sampling the cuisine

the ideal location for an farmers market in dover, in my opinion, would be the old indoor market in bench street.
a town centre site would give the impression of a refugee camp.
i hasten to add, i do not see one happening for the reasons i gave earlier.
incidentally, i am informed that the excellent greengrocers shop in the charlton centre is just an offshoot of a local farm.
can anybody confirn this?
