07:568588I've heard about these of course John, but not sure if they will catch on here - do you think we have enough visitors/tourists coming here ?
Horace does sterling work in the Market Square on cruise days; there's a bus (buses) to bring people into Town from the cruise terminals; there's a "cruise welcome desk" at the cruise terminal(s), but the welcomers/greeters are told, emphatically told, to be re-active not pro-active.
The whole set-up for cruise passengers coming into Dover is designed to be unhelpful and I'm not talking about those who are going on a day-excursion, but those who want to discover our Town and its history.
There's enough information at the cruise welcome desk, but waiting behind a desk for people to approach it, is the wrong way to promote Dover - be out there, talking to the cruise passengers - the difference will be obvious as to who is a passenger going on an organised excursion and who is going to come into Town, so it should be encouraged, so that Dover businesses (and I'm not talking about taxi and bus companies) can get a bigger bite of the cake.

The Greeters is a good programme, run by volunteers, who love the town they live in, know the history of the town, and are personal guides to those that book them prior to them coming to Dover, Guest Houses, Hotels etc, will also have the info, so anyone staying at these places will also be given the chance of a personal guide to the place of their choice, (ie) if a visitor requests a Greeter to take them to a specified place that Greeter will know every detail and history of that place.

12:018598New York, Thanet and now Dover? I'd imagine the New York tourist board went on a fact-finding mission to see how Planet Thanet manages to pull in so many tourists. The Big Apple's always had trouble attracting visitors. The place is just too parochial and there simply isn't enough to do. Perhaps it needs a cable car.
