A video of the planning committee's deliberations is available for thirty days on Youtube. The proceedings lasted one hour and each speaker spoke for 5-6 minutes each initially and with one or two subsequent interventions. The planning officer and the heritage officer also spoke, together with two objectors and one supporter, who happened to be a representative of McDonalds whose face was not seen.It was telling to hear the points of view expressed by the councillors individually and applause at one point from the public gallery to objection expressed. So now the decision is taken as was expected. It is reassuring therefore to note that according to McDonalds there will be three daily litter picks of their site within a radius of 150 metres "by volunteers";that the access and egress of the roadway into and out of the site has been calculated by highways not to impact on the heavy, significantly lorry traffic, often snarled up in long queues all the way along Townwall Street,or with lorries speeding up from the Woolcomber Street traffic lights, and finally that the design and position of the drive through building fits in with the, quote "vernacular" of it heritage position. The fact that there had been no other planning applications for a brownfield site was made several times. Thus then has local democracy been enacted.
