  And there was me thinking people actually read our excellent book, Dover Past and Present !!
  
  Promenade Pier opened in May 1893.
  Length was 900 feet
  Pavillion later added 1901
  Requisitioned by the Admiralty in WW1
  Never returned to the public

  Wow! Fantastic pics Paul - thanks for sharing them with us. I haven't got your book but after seeing these photos I must get a copy it looks fascinating.

  Ahhhhh, I should`ve revised my books before commenting on the front page this morning. Thanks Paul, great picture`s again mate. The picture above is one of the best view`s I`ve ever seen of the current Debradlei wharf area.

  Im a lover of your book Paul, have it here beside me...must admit I forgot about the Promenade Pier. But thats an amazing aerial shot there in post 3 and gives a complete indication of how it was. All the other shots most interesting too. Well done all for keeping us up to speed.

  The Promenade Pier is mentioned every so often on the forum and the one time existence of same is always greeted with great surprise. Then it gets forgotten and the next time it is mentioned it again comes as a complete surprise to various illustrious forumites. Bet you that the next time it is mentioned, it will get the same reaction!
  
  This is my favourite photo of the pier as it shows the WW1 battlecruiser HMS Inflexible in the background awaiting scrapping in the Camber. It is totally mystifying to me that we did not preserve a single battleship or battlecruiser of the sixty odd constructed from the Dreadnought to the Vanguard - a huge, fundamental and irretrievable gap in our naval heritage.

  Yes Kath - the very outside gate (not in your pic) are near Maidstone, all the inner gates were taken for scrap in WW2.
