23:0515636In the DTC offices, Maison Dieu House, Biggin Street, Dover.
Politics, it seems to me, for years, or all too long, has been concerned with right or left instead of right or wrong.

08:3015642Thanks David
I saw Sue (Jones) at the Best of.......business networking meeting last night, where she was talking about the Fair-trade meeting; I've asked her to send me the details electronically so I can circulate it round.

16:0115748I have RSVP'd my little slip of paper today..dropped it off at the Town Council offices confirming that ColetteB, Barry WS and meself will be in attendance. We were at it last year too. Very interesting.
I wonder if this Fairtrade initiative is gathering ground...or has it been hit by the recession, as the prices of goods can be that bit more expensive. For example the organic farming business has been clobbered. In better more afluent times people enjoyed organic, but now huddle together en masse in the cheap end of the supermarket own brand.

16:5115752See you there Boss,it is always worth paying a little extra for fair trade, but so many supermarkets don't do it still.
If you knew what I know,we would both be in trouble!

20:0715785the boss points out fairtrade is very laudable, never hear anyone speak against the concept.
however, when times get difficult such niceties get forgotten, unless one can afford ones principles.

19:2515835I have had a call telling me that Dovers application for Fairtrade Status has been approved!! believe me it has been a tough fight as the approval isn't just filling in a form.
2 years of meetings and working by the committee and now we can put the badge up but now the real work starts. Please come on thursday and hear about it and what it really means to those who have even harder times than us in a recession.

09:2115852Well done to Big Dave on this one as I beleive he took the lead on this whole thing. I am sure many of us are not clear exactly what this award of Fairtrade Status for Dover actually means in day to day terms but no doubt all will be explained on thursday night. Should be an interesting evening. Hope to see a few of the oul regulars there.

09:3715855Very much a team effort.
The committee includes representatives from the churches,Dover Grammar, the co-operative movement, DTC, River parish and fair trade retaillers and support by sponsorship from the Co-op and Marks and spencer.
This was our second application.
Our work involves stands at functions, contacting local outlets and support to retailers then advertising the benefits. We also have to liaise with all the other groups in Kent and the Fairtrade federation.
Dover Regatta is a great supporter and it is part of their plans each year to promote it.
canterbury and Thanet are our nearest neighbours with approval and it is a growing movement.
DTC use Fairtrade goods ( principally drinks) so do my office and many others in the town - we will be producing a booklet ( with sponsorship! - so we arent costing the ratepayers very much! ) showing where you can get the products .
eg - just found a cafe without fairtrade so are convincing them to do so - then the group will give them a cert to put in the window and put them in our guide.
The dover outdoor veg market on a saturday often has fairtrade bananas at £1 a large bag!
thats all!

10:4415861Fairtrade tastes better because it tastes better and because we know where it has come from - that always improves the flavour!!!

12:0416000I am a little sceptical about so called 'Fair Trade'
It is only really needed because of NAFTA and EU protectionism.
The best way to help these people and countries is through free trade.

14:2016007See you there on thursday then Barry as the boss of the Fairtrade federation Towns group is coming to congratulate us and explain about it all. Then is the time to cover the adam smith allegations - these can be seen on the Fairtrade website.
Unfortunately we are having problems getting the producers here they are trapped in Ghana last I heard....
I agree with free trade but it needs a catchnet for those who can't compete on equal terms. Otherwise it would be like a country without policing - Devil take the hindmost.

Maybe that is an unfortunate comparison!!
