The thing Brian says about rugby is valid: Rugby (league or union, it matters little) is a much tougher game. I will say that I think Union is not the game it was - not by a long way - since it went pro, but the players are fitter than ever before and the camaraderie among supporters really make it so more enjoyable than football.

What I don't like to see is using a poor World Cup campaign as a reason to run Great Britain down; the fact is that we were beaten by a much better team in Germany - that doesn't mean that everything to do with this country is wrong and needs slagging off. What I believe needs to happen is that we play football with pace and passion, as it's played every week in our domestic leagues, and not the continental way that the continentals are going to be better at than us. I would also like to see a British manager as the foreigners used, Eriksson and Capello, have not proved a success.

I would acknowledge that Capello is not a stupid man, though - signing a two-year extension to his contract before the tournament wasn't a daft move, was it? The FA need to ask themseleves whether it wouldn't have been a better move to have waited until after the tournament and judged his performance on results, irrespective of whether AC Milan wanted Capello or not, before signing anything. It's a £12m mistake, in my view. Very expensive egg on some faces at the FA.
