Sadly the demise of the local is not only the fault of the smoking ban (and how long before there are a pile of objections to people standing outside smoking?) but also the constant tax increases on draught beer etc. making it cheaper to buy in from a supermarket. It was a knee jerk law that was badly thought out and took no time to consider the fate of those pubs that form the heart of so many communities. I wonder how many of those who decided upon it owe their existance to their parents meeting in a pub?
