Yesterday following on from one of my auto computer downloads, a major looking window popped up on my computer offering me a wide choice of Browsers. I thought to myself this is kind of sudden..whats going on!? But then scratching through the old grey cells, the mental archives, I think I remember a recent EU ruling which declared that Microsoft had an unfair advantage, an unfair monopoly. Your computer comes with Microsoft Internet Explorer all set up, all built in, so the other manufacturers of Browsers cannot get a serious look in. This was considered by the EU to be unfair practice and Microsoft were ordered to make amends promptly...or else.
Now I havent looked any of this up so am sketchily remembering it roughly here.
So this sudden generosity of spirit was backed up with EURO power. You now have a choice of browsers from the following...
MOZILLA FIREFOX
OPERA BROWSER
INTERNET EXPLORER 8
GOOGLE CHROME
SAFARI
I wonder if any of you guys have experience of the other browsers?
are they any good?
or is Microsfot still king.

I have Chrome and Firefox on my pc as well a IE. Sadly I have to use IE for some financial services provider sites because the others are not compatable. They are both much better and faster than IE so I use IE as little as possible. Chrome is the best of them.
I only use IE, having experimented with all those listed by PaulB. However, I must confess to being a fan of Microsoft, a company that over the last 30 years has cynically brought me software that I want to use at a price I want to pay.
As for Google, well, be warned, they centrally record everything you do with their products to enable marketeers to data mine you information in order to present you with "appropropriate" advertising. Their cookie with the unique ID in it, which expires in 2038, has been tracking all of the search terms you've ever used while searching their main index.
They also share this information with government bodies and thish has lead to at least one high profiile case in the U.S. where mixing up the search criteria lead the FBI to think a Senator was interested in sex and bombs, and of course they arrested him. You can imagine the damage done to his family and career.
The founders of Google, Sergey Brin and Larry Page went to Stanford Univeristy and specialised in computers, data mining and social ethics. Not too sure why the third subject was of interest, you can draw your own conclusion.
For those of you who are anti-Microsoft/Bill Gates, think twice about the real motives behind Google; they are much closer to 1984 than anything we've seen so far.
So, no, I try to use Google little or not at all.

IE sucks and even IE8 is a bit of a security risk
As Sid says Chrome is a Google product and given the way they are using the data they store etc. I use them as little as possible and certainly do not trust them
Opera is nice and fast and not bad to use
Firefox is my preference (though they do need to sort out its footprint on your hard disk and its memory usage in the next version) the current version - 3.6 is nice and fast, supports tabbed browsing, has a number of really good plug ins to further enhance security (Ad blocker plus, no script, flashblock)
Safari is an Apple product and whilst it looks slick it is not very good IMHO

Microsoft for me too, Sid. Couldn't get on with Firefox - gave it an extended trial last yet then back to IE which I know and trust. Google Chrome lasted all of an hour before I uninstalled it. Just didn't like it.

Love Google Chrome - fast And slick.
Use it 95% of the time. Major disadvantage is the lack of auto fill for forms though,
