20:3611402i see that shoppers in the irish republic are swarming all over the north to save money on their christmas shopping.
the asda store in enniskillen is now the 6th busiest outlet in the whole of the global walmart chain.
irish goverment ministers are berating the shoppers for taking money out of the country and paying vat to the uk government.
is if anyone cares, we all used to pile over to calais when the situation was similar.
one dublin visitor to the north offered a two fingered salute to the irish government, his reasoning was that his government had raised vat to 21.5% whilst the ukcut theres to 15%.
add that to the exchange rate and one can see why people do the trip.

21:0111405quite right brian , and due to the foresight of our elected representatives, we will have a branch in our town in a year or so.
i have spoken to posh barry and allayed his fears, pate de fois gras, kedgeree and gentleman's relish will be on the shelves.
a leather chesterfield will be made available whilst his gentlemans gentleman does the shopping.

07:4411427There was a piece on the early evening news last night about Cite de Europe and other Calais shops being empty (of English and French) and Canterbury full of French.
I've heard one or two French speaking people here in Dover but not many.
Canterbury's equivalent of Town Centre Manager was French, so that may have helped.
I did say a couple of weeks ago that we (Dover) should be advertising our Town in Nord pas de Calais - but do our shops all take the Euro ?? I don't think so.
