Farewell PS Ryde
- 13 March 2010 23:5143229This historic vessel, the world`s last coal-fired, sea-going paddle steamer has gone for scrap. Built before the last war for the Southern Railway, she was requisitioned by the Royal Navy in 1939, and saw active service during D-Day. It`s very sad to see this sort of thing happening today, and future generation`s will be asking WHY? I admit to being ignorant of this vessel, and the group that was trying to save it. The £7 million pound price tag to save and restore her, is not a large amount in these troubled times. I mention this as it has appeared in a current magazine, and I thought, what a crowd puller if such a vessel were being restored in the Wellington dock next to Debrad`s. It was in servicebetween Portsmouth and the Isle of Wight.

- 14 March 2010 08:4543240I agree with that Sid, they could have tried to restore/save it long before it got that bad and it would have been cheaper too.
Those 3 bodies must have people able to complete a successful funding application form.
