Anybody mentioned today's event in Pencester Gardens or have I missed it? Can hear the P.A. announcements up here in Victoria Park and, looking it up, this is what is on. Too strenuous for an idle git like me but sounds great for those of an active disposition!

this was one of the better advertised local events, banners and signs everywhere for the past fortnight.
i ventured in and various young and healthy looking people kept thrusting leaflets detailing "fun packed " activities.
tired me out, reading them, so i went for a lie down.

Whoops. Just noticed that Scotchie started a thread about this back on 12th July.
Better change the subject quick.
Got distracted by spending the afternoon reading through a mass of newspaper clippings kindly given to me by Sylvia in the Hospice Shop. Her husband cut them out of the Dover Express in 1979 and they are a reprint in over 170 parts of the whole of Bavington Jones "Dover. A perambulation of the town, port, and fortress." I have the book but the articles have additional pictures and extended captions which are quite fascinating.
As usual, one weeps over all that has been lost. The history of Dover is one of continuous demolition. What a town this would be if the best of the old could have been retained alongside the new. People had little interest in that in past centuries unfortunately and it is still something we have to guard against today.

I certainly agree with that Ed.
People didn't seem to realise or care that they were destroying living history as the bulldozers moved in.
Most of these things were destroyed years ago long before Jean and I moved here - some before the Luftwaffe and some after.
You mentioned John Bavington Jones; I found a Dover-map of his on the internet stating where the mediavel walls of Dover were (to be used for the Historic Walks of Dover I'm hoping to start and promote soon); turned out that later research showed he was wrong on the location of the walls and gates.

There is a lot that Mr Bavington-Jones just assumed without knowing the facts.... then again he was a Dover Express journalist......
Been nice knowing you :)
