Whisking through Market Sq on my motorised vehicle a few minutes ago and sadly I could see that our nice little centre of town tourist asset, the fountain, is still boarded up and looking fairly awful.
Why ??
A double whammy of boarding and wire barrier things is keeping it in 'enjoyment prohibited' mode. Its the height of summer, max tourists rambling streets, and this just has the rubber stamp of failure written all over it.

I noted that yesterday while perusing the market stalls Paul. Maybe it`s to compliment the two building yards on the sea front. Incidently, I noted this is the second week of no pig on the spit roasting away.

Paul - isn't that cos of the Football ? Presumably it will be opened up again after tonight...
Been nice knowing you :)
I totally support improvements in Dover, but I really question the timing of some of the stuff. Tourists, hello?

Exactly...
Paul dont think the world cup is still a feature in Market Square. After England lost to Germany all bets were off for mass gatherings by the fountain. I was over in the Square for that match and a good crowd turned up so maybe fair enough re boarding it up then, but I doubt if there have been any crowds since. That was a long time ago now in summer terms, summers are all too short, so why is there such a nervous overkill.
Is it the market? open a market close the fountain...the powers that be have the eternal jitters. Look what happened with the road closing stuff initially and so on so forth. I dont know...its all overkill so Im bewildered in Dover.
Would be interesting to know if the final is being shown tonight and if it is will anyone show up to watch in the square. If anyone is over there tonight and has that info let us know.

Thanks for that Brian. I did mention on here before that £3.50 was a bit steep for a pork roll, even if you did get a good bit of pork on it. Two of you there, and that`s £7!! Could get 3 bacon rolls and tea for two in several different places in town for that. £3.50`s okay for a first try of one, but will people keep coming back each week at that price? You can get 12 nice soft rolls for a quid these days. No, I`m not surprised it finished.

If the fountain isn't allowed to flow properly then it should be replaced by something attractive for the tourists and not boarded up continuously. It must be one thing or the other, surely.

Is this the same expensive fountain that is looked over the ex-pensive TV screen that no-one watches?

Indeed it is Bob, and I can only assume that the BBC is getting too much licence money, and just doesn`t know what to do with it all.

post 3 states the correct reason for the closure of the fountain, presumably it will reopen tomorrow and all the bins brought back.

Fountain up and running and the litter bins have all been replaced, lets hope that the Market Square will look a bit better now. Sheli
Ah - Radio 3. You have to love a radio channel that has a presenter with the name MorePeach. (I know the spelling is different, but it sounds so lovely.........).
