the last government implemented a scheme where the children of working families on very low incomes would get free school meals from next september.
our new caring coalition government has now cancelled this.
so much for them protecting the most vulnerable.
Just to get this straight. The present Government has NOT axed free school meals, children whose parents are on income support or jobseeker's allowance will continue to be eligible.
There will however be no extension of the provision of free school meals for families earning less than £307/week.
Perhaps these people who have chosen to have children could use some of their child benefit, £20.30 for first child and £13.40 for subsequent children to make the little darlings sandwiches.
Labour has gone but the misinformation continues!

you have not read my post properly, i am referring to working people on low income.
not misinformation sid, those on high rates of benefits will still get the free meals, whilst those working and taking home less will lose out.
Howard I did indeed read you post carefully and merely wished to point out that all the present Government is doing is retaining the 'status quo ante' and that no-one will 'lose out' on what they have already.
There are many who will think that the Government is somehow stopping free school meals which is far from the truth.

Although Jersey has just announced a £71m surplus the states have decided to stop free school milk as "it is no longer necessary in todays society as most children have a well balanced diet".
Marek
I think therefore I am (not a Tory supporter)
Marek, £71m divided between a population of 88,000 is over £800 each.
Stop whining, when you get your share back you'll be able to bath in the stuff!

Howard/Bob I'm confused.
Howard, you clearly state, "our new caring coalition government has now cancelled this."
Bob, you also clearly state, "the present Government is doing is retaining the 'status quo ante' and that no-one will 'lose out' on what they have already."
So, which is it if there is no misinformation?

sid
the last government brought this in to start in september, the new government has cancelled it.
the information came from sky news, hardly a hotbed of reds under the beds.
So, Bob is wrong or misinformed then?

I do not know what is going on, but will say that free school meals should not be stoped for some of the kids that is the only full meal that they get all day.

very good point there, just to clarify the position, the last administration extended free school meals to children of working parent/s on a low income from this coming september.
the new administration has now cancelled this.
people on benefits will carry on with this perk.
Then that is the right way forward IMHO.
