Have been to two or three memorable funerals, several where bright colours were worn, two where there was a beautiful basketwork coffin. Music: Here comes the sun by the Beatles; Onedin line theme (with the bells), for someone involved in that programme and a historian (that was very moving);
A friend some years ago wanted a cardboard coffin, the church was full on the day and cortege with procession delayed coming in because it was raining, but when it did the coffin wasn't covered with cloth or flowers, and as everyone gasped together the noise was quite audible - the coffin looked like a 'flat pack'. I think that was probably going too far, I like the idea of basketwork (beautiful). But it was her choice.
A week ago went to a village funeral, entrance to the stirring music of Elgar's Enigma variations (wonderful) and exit to HM Royal Marines Band playing Life on the Ocean Wave. A very funny eulogy by the son, who said to the congregation: when you go out, march slowly, straight backs and smile'. Everyone wore bright coloured clothes, it was a real celebration of someone over 90. His ashes were to be scattered off the end of Deal Pier. A lovely, intelligent gent.
Very meaningful funeral.
