  As a further balance here, it should be remembered that cannabis was criminalised in the US following a campaign led by the press owned by Hearst, who also owned a lot of paper mills, just after somebody patented a cheaper and more sustainable way of producing paper from hemp plants. Didn't the tabacco industry produce studies to show the benefits of smoking, even employing Lady Thatcher as a spokesperson?
  
  Whenever there are economic considerations those most threatened always seem to find 'experts' to produce studies that defend the status quo. (I know but we have to reclaim its original meaning)
