Gordon Brown paid a dynamic looking visit to frontline Afghanistan yesterday and met the troops in the blazing heat of the hot desert location. I guess it was the usual morale booster and he listened with concerns and with interest. The problem is there is no end in sight to this conflict, we have hardly scratched the surface of a beginning. Now there is demand from the US Generals for 20,000 more troops as with the current force levels they are getting nowhere against a determined and battlehardened Taliban. isnt this Vietnam reborn?

If that isnt bad enough our troops are dying, dying so that they can bring democracy to a country that doesnt want democracy, or to put it another way, a population that shows no interest in it whatsoever. In one region with 85,000 people on the electoral roll only 150 bothered to vote. There were other regions of similar malaise. Somebody tell me this is worth it??

More and more people both here and in the USA think this is barking mad(see the poll below). Yet the Politicians want to continue saying that its keeping our own streets safe...hmmmm
