    Colin, it's in a public cemetery so it's 'legal' to have a photo taken with / of it. Uncivilised well that's a matter of opinion; I know that the gentleman who was buried beneath it had a great sense of humour so he's probably fine with it. However I wouldn't get in the car (although I would have fitted) as I feel that would have been disrespectful. I never climb onto monuments to take photos and am always respectful. I often tidy up in cemeteries and rarely actually photograph new monuments - most of mine are the older Victorian type. Sometimes I will come across one where it doesn't 'feel right' to photograph so I don't.
