    A Charles Elphicke, Conservative, came second to Kerry Pollard, Labour in the 2001 General Election at St. Albans.

    Charles Elphicke polled 15,423 votes; Kerry Pollard polled 19,889 votes.

    Although he lost the election he increased the Tory vote by 2%

    In the 2005 General election Kerry Pollard, Labour, lost the seat to Ann Main, Conservative.

    Kerry Pollard polled 15,592 votes; Ann Main polled 16,953 votes.

    A fall of 11% in Labour vote.
