    As far as I know it is religious Howard as they even had religion in the middle ages. Without the flagellation of austerity and sacrifice, as is often suggested by religion, I doubt if anyone would be fasting. The pancakes came before the fast. But i suspect originally it might not have been pancakes..they may have come with Lyons Corner House.
