  i stand corrected, paul is right, it is an old christian tradiation.
  
  checked with a church going neighbour who tells me that it was comandeered as a protestant thing at the time of henry the eighth, but had been a roman catholic tradition well before that.
  
  i used to work with an irish catholic girl many years a day that always gave up cigarettes for lent.
  
  the only problem was that she didn't smoke in the first place.
