This happens the same time every year.
I have closely been watching watching two nesting Mallards ( ducks ) Hoping for the chance to get some smashing pictures for the forum.
Being down the garden working all day I thought today would be the day that I would get them. NO WAY.
The first brood of 10 Hatched yesterday and today there are only 4 left.
The second nest has been totaly destroyed, all of the eggs scattered or broken.
And the reason. Dicks With Dogs.
Now you know why I kicked it all into touch......The pillocks in charge don't give a toss.

i watched a family with a staff in pencester a week or two ago, it was clear that the dog, seeing the shallow water, fancied his chances of getting to some ducks.
the family knew it was all wrong judging by the loud comments made in my direction, i stayed, they left.

Sounds about right H.
Stewart. The river has for some years now been classed as MAIN RIVER status and is looked after ( thats a laugh ) by the EA.
They only turn up in warm weather or when they feel like it, they don't care about wild life being destroyed or illegal fishing around here. As one of them told me a few years ago, " I didn't even know Dover had a river " No one from the EA even lives near here.
We never will get what the river wants or needs and thats a fact.

I did hear that the EA are worried that the River Dour will flood the harbour in Dover. Has anyone else heard this one?
How can a chalk river flood the channel?

That's outrageous Ian. Isn't there CCTV down there? (I know, stop laughing again). What ba*****s would let their dog destroy like that? (I know again.....sorry). Realistically, what can we do?

bern
the place is running alive with cameras, very rarely is any wrongdoing followed up.
the answer is simple(like ian, i too carp on about this) is an old fashioned parkie.
call it any fancy name, but a parkie would stop all the problems, just by being there, people that behave badly do not like being watched.
go to any park or public garden in western europe and there will be some uniformed individual overseeing the place.

plenty of cctv cameras in the pencester area, just no arrests.
latest news, heard on a newsflash that the dour clashed with the channel and a tsunami is expected within the hour.
no need to panic though.

I think the best thing that could happen is that the Dour have its main-river status taken away and allow it to be returned to local protection.
The Environment Agency either have no interest in the Dour, or the resources to look after it - or both.
As Ian has said many times, there is no control over what is dumped in there, no control over illegal fishing, owners encouraging their dogs to attack the ducks and ducklings with impunity.
It's as if the river doesn't exist.
I have written to various people and bodies over a period of time and never received a reply from one of them - is this disdain/disrespect for me, the river, or perhaps Dover ?

trouble is, if it is returned to local control, a steering group would be set up!!!
i think at present the environment agency is only responsible for the ecological side, the other things like litter, illegal fishing and general misbehaviour is still the responsibility of the district council.

Please Howard, DON'T mention the word ( steering group )
.
Your last line says it all, we had better just draw a line under this thread and leave it alone because it will never be going anywhere.
The heart of Dover, the river has ( DID ) serve us well for a long time from industry to pleasure, sad to see it go down hill and flood the harbour.
