Just to put The Churchill closure into perspective.
The number of hotel companies being declared insolvent in 2009 increased by 61%. This mostly due to corporate/business market strictly curtailing budgets.
London appears to be the only area bucking the trend.

This statistic seems strange as more British people are taking holidays in the Uk , lets hope for a great summer to end this trend .

Perhaps this tells you that holiday makers are "the icing on the cake" & business trade in terms of seminars, conferences & travelling business activity is the bread & butter keeping the trade afloat.

It's true, corporate stuff is the staple of hotel and hospitality trade, and it is usually done fairly well it has to be said.

Corporate Business is of course very important to the Hotel trade, but they in fact pay a lower rate generally, than the tourist trade, so I would have thought that trying to build up the tourist trade would have been very beneficial to them.
England tourism, whether in-bound or home-grown can always be increased and making (in our instance) Dover, a destination with Group Travel would have helped enormously.
Employment, increase in foot-fall and trade will help every one.

Hotel Occupancy in Jersey fell last year by 3% but the self catering apartments, chalets and campsites were fully booked showing an increase of 15%.
Maybe people are tightening their belts and are looking at alternative cheaper holidays in the UK.Bookings for this year are up on last year so much so that more sites(already sited tents and chalets) are being built, maybe its the way forward?
