09:3411477You would hardly know it these days, but Christmas is a religious festival. Yes indeed its true, we are celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ. Of course the religious aspect of it all has ebbed away. Now the topical stories on all the news bulletins show concern over one thing and one thing only this Christmas, how the High St is doing in the financial downturn.
As our beloved icons like Woolworths breathe their last dying sigh, we bemoan their passing. A great and familar God will soon depart the mortal coil of High St UK.
Yet why do we care about Woolworths? were we shareholders, were we getting something out of them being there? No , not really.
The Church further down the High St UK lies neglected. People trundle by going hither and tither, catching late bargain turkeys and toys, how many of us even know what Christmas is about. How many of us even consider going to Church?
I am afriad I am just another one of that guilty throng...chasing toys and turkeys. I wont be going to any church either. Another savage with no soul. But I once did and I remember I got more out of Christmas then.

In between everything else today(we were out shopping at 6am this morning as the wife had to go to work!) we shall be attending mass at St Paul's Church RC.It reminds me of what Christmas is really about,we enjoy the carols and the service and will have hot mulled wine upon our return home.Everyone has the right to celebrate (or not) as they see fit.

11:3811485I don't go to mass but at this time of year I will often pop into a church (regardless of denomination) and say a little prayer or light a candle.
Oooh mulled wine Marek, haven't had any yet this year, what time do you want me round?!

20:5511505We alway's go to St Paul's for Christmas Mass, the Children's mass is always enjoyable with the Nativity even one year they had a real 'live' donkey. The Spirit of Christmas is very apparent at church and reminds us of the 'beginnings' at this magical time of year.
White wine Ian? I'll have a word in the Almighty's ear

I think you realy have opened up a can of worms here.
This is probably a subject that even myself and barryw could agree mostly upon.
Having been through the catholic religion(and no they are no different to other religions)
I can't say they offered much, in fact they did he opposite to what the set out to do.
I attended all the catholic schools st pauls(now closed) st richards(when we joined it was an all girl school st ursula's)then changed name to st richards.
And St Edmunds.
So Iv certainly been through it.
To mention just few things i encountered would be enough to turn you off religion all together(I still do have a belief, but through no help of the leading lights of the catholic church.
Its to horrific to put on a public post, and also some of the way leading persons acted in the community was questionable.
Now you can say, yes every body has some bad apples, but this was not a few!!!
SO paulb, having been a church goer for many years every Sunday in my youth
You wouldn't get me there now.
Of course you then read horrific stories on other faiths to(child abuse etc)
so its not one faith.
Just that I went through one faith in a very heavy way when young, and maybe I'v seen the light, but a very different light!!!!
So yes theres meaning Paulb, but you have to believe those promoting you also have faith in.
Will end there.
Something very close to my heart.
and I could go on, but in respect of all those good people I will stop.
