And so it came to pass that my old mobile phone died, well not so much died more froze. Damn touch screens, in order to get it to work it wasn't so much of a touch, it was more of a thump. It took 20 thumps to dial a number or find 'Send Message'. "I'll call you when I get there" I'd say to friends and inwardly pray that there would be a land line or pay phone when I got to wherever - anything other than having to try to raise the mobile from the dead.
After weeks of perusing phone shops, websites and brochures I steered away from the I-phone to the HTC HD2 (it has better reviews than the I-phone, ner ner na ner ner!) The order was placed and the following day a DHL courier beat a path to my door clutching a box. I knew it was going to bode well when it took me a good fifteen minutes to unwrap said box. But eventually there it was, all shiny and new and...well....phone-like.
By passing the instruction manual as I always do, complete technophobe here thinks she can just change sim cards and go - wrong, wrong WRONG! After much swearing I gave in and looked at the instruction book, I decided I didn't speak instruction book language and there were few nice little pictures. What I needed was a 12 year old who could show me how to use the damn thing, now where to find a 12 year old? 'How to charge phone', yes I suppose that would be useful. Fix plug in the end of sliding thing, put lead in small hole at bottom, wonder what sliding thing is for? Never mind if I bash it it fits. Should the lights come on? Oh wait, sliding thing is to do with the car phone charger. Maybe I should just charge it in the car? Can't do that, Les has car at work. Ok maybe there will be a bit of juice left in the battery, I'll just put my old sim in the new slot. Er....where is the new slot? After spending ten minutes trying to insert the sim into the wrong slot I give up and make a cup of tea. Fifteen minutes later it's back to the instruction manual. What's 'Pinch zooming'? Sounds painful. Oooh look I can make a conference call from an e mail.......why? And there's a thing that'll tell me what the weather is like. It should just state 'This is the great British Summer; don't be stupid it's bloody raining. I notice I swear more when setting up a phone, the 'B' words are quickly replaced with 'S' and 'F' ones (and I don't usually swear that much.) 'Playing music in landscape view'? No I don't want to do that, I just want the 'On' button or 'Make a phone call', is that really too much to ask? Give up with instruction manual and decide to download colour version on my pc, I'm sure it will look much clearer in colour.
Ahhh nice pictures, this is more like it...............'Record the chronicles of your life. Wherever you go, take photos of the places you visited and store their GPS location and other details to your phone'. All I have to do is press this, tap that, slide button A put phone on it's front....oh no wait that's for speaker phone.............'Full QWERTY', 'Compact QWERTY' or 'Phone Keypad' layout...............Dear God I need alcohol..............NOW!! Chapter Six, 'Ways of Synchronizing Your Phone'. Pass the painkillers, my head is thumping. The dog has taken to hiding as the language and thumping of desk is getting a bit much. Ok one more try, 'Tap the Add Slide button and repeat steps 4 and 5'. 4 and 5? Where are steps 1-3? 'Copying and pasting text to your reply message' Ok, so now we are getting somewhere. Oh, the phone needs to be switched on for that? Decide to give up and wait till husband gets home. Pour self large drink, take paws off dogs ears and go and lie down in a darkened room..............bliss!
And that is why, when asked what mobile I wanted for Chrimbo, I said "just get one that allows me to make and receive phone calls and text messages". My mobile doesn't connect to the web, doesn't take photos, doesn't perform brain surgery by micro spotlight, or sing in the bath. Basic functionality, simples!

Not pretty Jeane, but mighty functional. I might have exaggerated the singing in the bath mode.

Thanks Matt. I had a blackberry but didn't get on with it so got a Samsung touch phone (which was fine until it died recently.) I was going to get an I phone but when I saw the HTC HD2 it was love at first sight so..........
True the only way I'm going to get used to it is by playing around with it so I'd like to apologise in advance to all the people who will know doubt get cut off calls or garbled messages from me for the next week!
